The Boards will be replaced gradually beginning in April, 2012. This has been a very early Ice Out! Caution should be exercised to prevent hypothermia from overexposure to the cold water. Use your PFDs out there! Road Commissioner Winchell said that no work is scheduled for the dam. We need to be attentive to the area to watch for water undercutting the dam and any sign of road settling above the culvert.
BEAVER UPDATE: At the Board Meeting on March 24, 1012, Road Commissioner David Winchell, Jr. told us that 2 beavers had been trapped this winter and 1 was killed by a vehicle. We will keep an eye on the water level in the area between Young’s Ridge Road and New Bridge Road. A work crew may be organized to clear out the remaining dam debris after approval is given by the state biologist.
BEAVERS AT WORK! THE BEAVERS ARE WORKING EVERY NIGHT TO BUILD A DAM AT THE DAM! EVERY DAY IT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED! ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT NEEDS A SOLUTION!
Dan Orino has talked with the selectmen who have agreed to pay 1/2 of the cost for a trapper to come in and remove the beaver(s), with WLA paying the other 1/2. The traps are supposed to be placed on October 14. Thanks to Dan, Drew, Bob and George for their diligence in clearing the dam every day!
Update- The first trapper quit, claiming that someone was moving and tripping his traps. Could it have been the beavers? George, Bob and Dan continued to remove the new work each day, when George got an idea! Beavers don’t like flourescent colors. So he strung a rope across the stream and hung an orange PFD on it. That, and the metal gate on the lake side seem to have done the trick! Of course, the beavers are still down in the woods somewhere and we can’t be done with the problem, but for now the lake is running and significantly lowered.

November 21, 2011 Update: Dan has been going into the woods in a tireless effort to keep the water flowing from our lake and prevent Spring floods. Today Gail Murano and Jeanne Achille joined Dan and pulled more branches out of the water. Soon it will be beaver trapping season and it will be dangerous for us to go in and risk stepping on a trap. We’re hoping that trappers will be successful. While we love beavers and all our native critters, sometimes their activity conflicts with what is best for our lake and homes.
