On August 1, 2013, Laurie Callahan of the York County Invasive Aquatic Species Project will lead a group of Wilson Lake volunteers and volunteers from other local lakes as we inspect the area from the public boat ramp to where the canal opens into the lake. Everyone who is able to join us is welcome to meet at 9:30 at the ramp. Laurie will teach us what to look for and provide us with equipment to help as we learn what native plants are growing in the canal and search for non-native (invasive) plants. It it easiest to look into the water from canoes, kayaks, other small boats or even through snorkel gear. Polarized sun glasses will help, as will a small, long handled rake (if you have one), and sunscreen is important!
It is critical that our lake is inspected on a regular basis to be proactive and catch any invaders early. If you’ve wondered what you can do to protect the lake you love, this is your chance to really help! Lakes around us are struggling to control the growth of these exotic plants and are spending many thousands of dollars per year. Let’s not let that happen to Wilson Lake!
