WLA communicates with Inland Fisheries and Wildlife regarding our fish population. This May approximately 3 million smelt eggs were placed in the stream that crosses Route 109 at the intersection of Hawk Road. IF&W is hoping to re-establish our smelt population. Smelt are an important food source for other fish and animals. IF&W agreed to this program on Wilson Lake due to work by the first WLA Watershed Survey and the Department of Transportation to repair the ditch system on Route 109. Road sand from Rte 109 had been eroding directly into the stream and the sand was considered the major factor in the crash of the Wilson Lake smelt population. Hopefully these new eggs will re-establish smelt and improve lake water habitat.
