Mark your calendar for this great opportunity!

On June 14, 2014, a collaborative effort of local lake associations will work with the Maine Volunteer Lakes Monitoring Program, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, and the York County Invasive Aquatic Plant Project to offer an invasive aquatic plant training and certification workshop in Acton. This program is being coordinated by the Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance and will offer free training to interested folks to enable them to help keep a watchful eye on the plants growing in our own lakes.

This is the first interstate training of this type to be offered and we are especially fortunate that it will take place right here in Acton at the Town Hall. There has been lots of publicity about the invasion of devastating plants into local lakes and it is very important that we realize how fortunate we have been to have dodged the bullet so far. Lake Arrowhead, only 35 minutes away is battling a milfoil infestation that is costing their association and homeowners $70,000 per year to try to control it. Balch Lake, our neighbor to the north, is also spending thousands of dollars per year to try to keep their milfoil infestation under control.

To expect that Wilson Lake will remain free of these devastating infestations is unrealistic and foolish. Our best protection is to arm ourselves with knowledge, keep a close eye on our plant life and catch any intruding invasive plants quickly.

Protect your financial investment in your beautiful lakefront home and give up one Saturday in June to become a trained and certified plant watcher.

Register for this event by calling AWWA at 1-603-473-2500.  Come to the workshop and bring/drag your friends and neighbors! Let’s join together to protect beautiful Wilson Lake.
