No one wants the lake less clean and enjoyable than it is. There are three main threats to the lake and what you can do.
Invasive plant species are a huge problem in Main lakes. Two Maine lakes have been closed to all boat traffic – yes ALL boat traffic – due to invasive plants. Invasive weeds really can choke a lake to prevent swimming and boating. What can you do? Know what is normally growing in the lake in front of your property and report suspicious invaders! Email WLA, use Facebook, or contact an Executive Board member.
Storm water erosion takes a toll on the lake every time it rains. Enough of it can cause algae blooms – enough to prevent swimming. What can you do? If you see signs of erosion on your property please contact WLA for help. There are simple things that we can do together to limit storm water erosion into the lake and streams.
Foreign substances that we put in the lake can cause harm over time. It all deteriorates into the chemicals that make it up. Soap adds fertilizer for algae. Lawn fertilizer ditto. Golf balls are known to break down in water. Fireworks contain metal contaminants and plastic debris that will break down over time. Fuel and oil spills are obvious contaminants. According to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the introduction of foreign substances into the lake is illegal. This is a rather wide sweeping statement, and not specific to a list of foreign substances. What can you do? Be aware that what we all put in the lake does facilitate water quality deterioration.
Only YOU can keep Wilson Lake water clean and enjoyable.
